Storage Needs 101 for the Average Wine Drinker

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Can anyone see a problem here? ;-o

There are two things at a minimum you will want to avoid when storing wines: Temperature Fluctuations and Sunlight. Poor storage of wine will have a lasting affect on the wine's flavor and/or bouquet. But some of you may say, no problem, your wine buying habit is for immediate consumption. Wine won't stay in storage long enough for you to worry about it, right?

If this sounds like you, there is a short article you may want to check out:
Storage Needs of the Average Wine Drinker
Here are 4 minimum points to remember.
• away from direct sunlight,
• temperatures between of 4ºC and 18ºC (40ºF and 65ºF),
• temperature does not fluctuate more than 2-3ºC (5ºF) once annually, and
• humidity levels are greater than 50%.

Where Wine and Art Do Not Mix

Sunday, September 23, 2007

I was browsing this image at Trendir, and thought, "Gorgeous", but upon closer inspection, I saw the pegs contained bottles of wine. First of all, in California I would want to know if this was earthquake safe. Probably not. Secondly, while this may look beautiful, heat rises. Why would anyone want to keep an expensive collection of wine in a hot spot? Maybe they are empty? Use this design in a wine cellar only please. It is a dynamic, stunning L-shape kitchen, but the design fails to store wine properly. For more views of this fabulous cabinetry take a look at Ernestomeda Barrique .

The marble is lovely too, but oye, the stains, the scratches and acid etching you will have from your Merlot wine. Good thing the marble is the color of wine. Helps the stains blend in.

I do like the Kidney shaped corner storage cabinet. Love the stainless toe kick too. Check out the oven! There is a drawer above it and below the cook top. Clever!

I am a big fan of open shelves in kitchens. Love the stainless banded shelves shown here.

160-Bottle Capacity Wine Cellar
When you hear "Electrolux" what is the first thing that comes to mind? Vacuum Cleaners. Well while Americans are just getting re-acquainted with the brand, Europeans have known about the advances in this line for years.

Not only do they have a gorgeous collection of appliances, I am happy to report that they have introduced an Exclusive Absorption Cooling System for Wine Storage.

The absorption principle is a chemical process. It requires no motor or compressor so operation is completely silent and vibration free. Any oenophile knows that vibration and heat is the kiss of death to a good bottle of wine. My client has an extensive and shall I say expensive wine collection. For years he rented space from an off site wine storage facility . This is a man who takes his wine collection seriously. Now while we didn't have the space to add a wine cellar on to the house, we made room in the kitchen design for a 24" wide unit that holds 160 bottles.
A wine cellar without a motor or compressor? Who knew!
